The Afon Tryweryn is one of the finest whitewater rivers in the UK. Whether you are an experienced whitewater kayaker bringing your own kit, or you're looking for top class coaching, The National White Water Centre is the place for you.
This is not a river suitable for novice kayakers and canoeists, but it is ideal for novice whitewater rafters!
- Bring your own kayak or canoe and paddle the world class Afon Tryweryn.
- River levels are dependent on suitable water levels being released from the reservoir above us.
- Book a training course at the National White Water Centre.
- We run a wide selection of training courses, including
Rescue 3 courses,
Paddle UK courses,
raft guide training,
first aid courses, and
kayak coaching.
You need your own kit, including boat and paddle.
The river As a guide, at usual flows, the upper section of river is Class 3/4, the lower river is Class 2/3 with Bala Mill Falls at Class 4. Bala Mill Falls has a leat running above the drop so can easily be avoided. We put the emphasis on individuals having the appropriate skills, experience and judgement to safely use this world class venue.
If in any doubt, book some coaching: either one of our courses or a bespoke session.
Miss Davies’ Bridge is a weak bridge: until further notice avoid passing beneath when there is a vehicle crossing.
You will need to send us a copy of your coaching qualification(s) and NGB membership, we will then set up a Member ID for you and send you the information you will need to book a group in.
Please read the venue guidance document before coaching on the river here.
Give us a call and we'll set up a group membership for you.
This will make it easier for you to book and pay for a group online.

Give way to all river users coming downstream. No paddler has absolute right of way. Show other river users the respect that you'd expect to receive in return.
Be aware that rafts handle differently to kayaks - a raft may be committed to enter either the flow or a feature and be unable to take evasive action.
Expect the unexpected! It's best to paddle as part of a group so you can support each other. Confidence is great but even the best kayakers are only ever between the last swim and the next.
There are concessionary kayaking/canoeing rates for under 18s, paddlers with disabilities, carers in receipt of Carer's Allowance, anyone in receipt of Universal Credit, those on Pension Credit, students in full-time education, and Blue Light card holders. Please speak to us when you book, and remember to bring your proof with you.
